What Kind of Pregnancies are “High Risk?”
According to UCSF (University of California, San Francisco), High Risk complications occur in only 6-8% of all pregnancies. The terminology “High Risk Pregnancy”, is used by the medical community to indicate a need to watch these mothers (and babies) more carefully; to provide special care to ensure the best possible outcome. A pregnancy may be considered high-risk for a variety of reasons. Some of these include:
- The mother has medical conditions that began before pregnancy, such as diabetes
- The mother develops a medical condition during pregnancy, such as preeclampsia
- The mother experienced problems in a previous pregnancy, such as miscarriage
- Problems are detected in the developing baby
- Complications occur during pregnancy, such as premature labor
- The mother is pregnant with multiples (twins or more) [1]
So, are abortions medically necessary?
Peter Cermak, in his article What Percent of Abortions are Medically Necessary?, stresses that the “percentage of abortions that are performed out of ‘medical necessity’ is a dynamic statistic, but in the United States it is exceedingly rare.”[2] Further, former Surgeon General of the United States Dr. C. Everett Koop said, “The fact of the matter is that abortion as a necessity to save the life of the mother is so rare as to be nonexistent.”[3] And in the United States, according to the compiled data of 1.3 million aborting women surveyed, 99% of abortions are not done because of any medical necessity.[4] Cermak goes on to say that, “We should expect that [the] percentage of life-threatening pregnancies will only decrease as modern medicine continues to make progress in saving mothers from these tragic complications.”
